Data centre design starts with IT infrastructure requirements and acceptable operating conditions. Data hall area alone does not define complexity. Rack power, density, redundancy, maintenance and expansion are key factors.
01Brief and site constraints
The brief defines rack numbers and configuration, design loads, availability requirements and growth phases. Check utility capacity, outdoor plant restrictions, delivery and maintenance access.
Define certification requirements separately where applicable. Redundancy of individual components does not establish a certified rating for the entire facility.
02Power and cooling
Consider distribution, uninterruptible power, backup sources and heat removal as connected systems. Define failure and maintenance scenarios at system level.
Choose the cooling arrangement against heat loads, site conditions and operational requirements. Airflow, rack layouts and floor construction must support that arrangement.
03Coordination and energy performance
The coordinated model is used to review routes, penetrations, service zones and replacement of major equipment. Calculations and installation sequencing complement model coordination.
PUE relates total data centre energy consumption to IT equipment energy consumption within defined boundaries over the same period. It is an energy metric, not a cooling-capacity ratio. Comparisons require consistent measurement conditions.
04Testing and operational readiness
Develop the test plan alongside the design. It should connect brief requirements, operating scenarios and the records needed to demonstrate results. Qualified specialists undertake testing under agreed safety arrangements.
Provide the operator with current diagrams, instructions and maintenance procedures. Cost and programme follow the engineering configuration and commissioning phases; floor-area pricing alone is insufficient for comparison.
